If you wish to help the greyhounds we would recommend you call the
authorities above rather than email them please.
Please will all our supporters also politely write to the ISPCA-
info@ispca.ie urging them to endeavour to find homes for these unwanted
greyhounds instead of killing them and suggest they launch a campaign in
favour of Irish people adopting 'greyhounds as pets' as well as campaigning
to put an end to this needless suffering and untimely death of innocent
young dogs all due to the callous Irish racing industry. Dogs die for the
price of a bet, that's it and this is absolutely scandalous! It must be
stopped. The ISPCA states on their website 'they care for all animals'!! Let
them prove it!

Discarded dogs given just one hour to live in shelter
Greyhounds put straight to sleep by vet, ISPCA admits 'Dogs ears are cut off
before greyhounds are dumped
HEALTHY greyhounds who are unfit for racing are being put down within an
hour of arriving at a dog pound, the Irish Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals has admitted. The anti-cruelty body confirmed that it has
been forced to destroy the animals as ‘Irish people just have not embraced
greyhounds as pets’. The revelation comes after a photograph emerged of nine
greyhounds crammed into a single kennel at the dog pound in Ennis, operated
by Clare County Council with the ISPCA. ‘There is a one-hour window when
greyhound owners can deliver those dogs that they want humanely destroyed.
‘The dogs are then held in a kennel for that hour,’ an ISPCA spokeswoman
said. The grim process happens every Friday between 9am and 10am when a vet
puts the dogs to sleep. Owners who breed the dogs for races or hare
coursing can drop their dogs into the pound and, for a fee of €20, the ISPCA
will destroy them. In most cases, no effort is made to find a new home. The
ISPCA said its policy of destroying healthy greyhounds is in response to
callous owners who abandon their dogs. Greyhounds are identified through
markings on their ears, but some owners cut the dogs’ ears off before
dumping them. ‘This policy was an attempt to avoid this sort of situation by
offering those with unwanted greyhounds the option of bringing the dogs to
the pound when the vet would be in attendance so they can be humanely put to
sleep. This policy is not limited to Clare or ISPCA pounds,’ said the
spokeswoman. The ISPCA denied that it makes no attempt to rehome greyhounds,
but a spokesman for Clare County Council said: ‘Greyhound owners only come
to the Ennis shelter with their dogs when they have decided they want to put
them to sleep.’ The ISPCA said people need to ask why there are so many
unwanted greyhounds – and ‘why an industry so heavily-subsidised with
taxpayers’ money is not investing more heavily in trying to alleviate the
situation’. Last year it emerged that ISPCA shelters put down more dogs than
any other dog-controlling agency, with a Donegal shelter putting down over
80 per cent of its dogs.
