DOZENS of greyhounds and their owners took a leisurely stroll through the
glorious grounds at The Vyne, in Sherborne St John.

They were taking part in the Great British Greyhound Walk to raise awareness
of the huge numbers of unwanted former racing dogs who need a loving home.

Normally, dogs aren't allowed on the National Trust site, and property
manager Dave Green, who has two greyhounds himself, said he is keen to
change that.

He said: "We're viewing this as a trial for the future. I took part in the
walk last year at Down Grange, in Basingstoke, and thought The Vyne would be
the perfect place for this year's event."

A total of 49 greyhounds and their owners took part in the 2012 walk - up on
the 30 attending last year.

Organiser Marion Wolstencroft, of Ennerdale Close, Basingstoke, said she was
thrilled to have been approached by The Vyne. She said: "It's such a
beautiful place to walk around and it's wonderful that dogs are being
allowed in for the day. We all love getting together and talking about
greyhounds. They are lovely dogs."

Donations and a prize draw on the day raised money, which will be split
between Fleet Greyhound Welfare, and Hersham Hounds, a Surrey-based charity
dedicated to re-homing greyhounds.
