Mosman vets run Mini-Mos course to save greyhounds

A TEAM from Mosman Vets are preparing to run the 10km Mini-Mos course in
support of greyhounds who never get that opportunity.

Six vets, nurses and support staff will run the event to raise funds for
Greyhound Rescue Australia. Vet Abby Tipler said many greyhounds which were
not deemed fast enough for greyhound racing end up being abandoned, put down
by vets or used for research purposes.

"There are 25,000 greyhound pups born in Australia every year and only a
handful of those are successful (in making it to the racing industry)," Dr
Tipler said.

"Racing greyhounds careers end at four years of age, but the average
greyhound lifespan is about 12, but many don't make it to that age."

Greyhound Rescue Australia rescues greyhounds from pounds and places them in
new homes.

Dr Tipler said many unsuccessful greyhounds were also sent to Korea and
China where they have even less chance if they cannot break into the
industry because those countries have no equivalent to Greyhound Rescue
Australia.

Dr Tipler has not run Mini-Mos before but said she could not wait to take
part in the event while also assisting an important charity.

Mosman Vets co-owner Rachele Lowe said this was the first in a number of
activities the centre will take part in to give something back to charity.
