More than 5,000 people have signed an online petition calling for an end to
greyhound racing in Macau amid an international outcry over the mass death
of dogs in the territory.
The petition was started after a Sunday Morning Post investigation last
month found that dogs were being put down at the rate of more than one a day
at the Macau Canidrome, Asia's only legal dog track.
A total of 383 greyhounds from Australia were put down by injection at the
Canidrome last year. In March of this year alone, 45 dogs were destroyed;
nearly all were healthy and no more than five years old.
The greyhounds are imported at the age of two or three and kept within the
Canidrome to run in the four-times-a-week races, but are usually put down if
they fail to finish in the top three for five consecutive races.
Because the Canidrome does not allow retired greyhounds to be taken on as
pets and because anti-rabies quarantine restrictions prevent their export to
Hong Kong, there is no hope of a life after retirement for the dogs, as
there is in other greyhound racing countries.
The Post story has been circulated by animal-welfare groups worldwide and
anti-greyhound-racing group Grey2K USA collected 5,200 signatures in an
online petition calling for an end to the sport in Macau.
The petition, addressed to the Macau government, quotes figures from the
Sunday Morning Post investigation and says Grey2K USA helped draft
legislation to stop greyhound racing on the Pacific island of Guam.
It argues: "As long as greyhound racing continues, greyhounds will suffer.
Please help end this terrible cruelty in Macau."
Hundreds of supporters from around the world added comments to the petition.
One of them, Lynn Sajdak, described the sport as "shameful to Macau".
Another wrote: "Macau is full of casinos. Why, oh why do they need to gamble
on dogs as well?"
The online petition comes after a letter signed by 24 animal-welfare groups
in China was sent to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard calling for an
immediate halt to the export of greyhounds to Macau.
The letter was signed by groups in Beijing, Chengdu , Xian , Dalian ,
Shandong and Guangzhou, who are also concerned over tentative plans to open
dog tracks across China in association with greyhound-racing experts from
Ireland.
Helen Stevens, co-ordinator of the UK-based group Greyhound Crusaders, said
of the online petition: "We are delighted with this response, as it shows
the wealth of feeling from people across the world for these innocent dogs,
whose lives have been cut short for the price of a bet.
"We have written twice to the Macau Canidrome asking for their response to
our calls for a closure of the track and have received no reply, so we can
only assume it is business as usual for them.
"But while greyhounds are dying every week at the track, caring people
across the world will do everything they can to help these innocent dogs
whose lives are wretched."
Sandy Macalister, executive director of the Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals in Hong Kong, said: "We are encouraged by the number of
people who have taken an interest in this issue, but we believe the ones who
are most likely to effect change and who have the responsibility to do so
are those at the source of supply, in Australia."
The Macau Canidrome did not respond to phone calls and e-mails from the
Sunday Morning Post asking for comment on the controversy.
END
Many thanks

A total of 383 greyhounds from Australia were put down by injection at the
Canidrome last year. In March of this year alone, 45 dogs were destroyed;
nearly all were healthy and no more than five years old.

An alliance of animal welfare groups from across China has called on the
Australian prime minister to stop the export of greyhounds to Macau's track,
where healthy dogs are destroyed at a rate of more than one a day when their
racing days are over.
A Post Magazine investigation today reveals 383 racing dogs imported from
Australia were given lethal injections at Stanley Ho Hung-sun's Canidrome
last year. In March, 45 dogs were destroyed at the venue, nearly all of them
healthy and no more than five years old.
The greyhounds are imported at the age of two or three, bought for up to
HK$50,000 each, and kept within the Canidrome to run in the
four-times-a-week races that generate millions of dollars a year in betting
revenue. Finishing outside the top three in five consecutive races is a
death sentence for a greyhound. Younger dogs are imported at the rate of 30
a month.
Because the track will not allow greyhounds to be taken on as pets after
retirement and because of anti-rabies quarantine restricting their re-export
to Hong Kong, they have no chance of a "second life".
The Animals Asia Foundation, backed by the Humane Society International, the
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Hong Kong, and 23 other
animal welfare groups in China, has written to Australian Prime Minister
Julia Gillard calling for an immediate halt to the export of greyhounds to
Macau.
The letter is signed by animal welfare groups in Beijing, Chengdu , Xian ,
Dalian , Shandong and Guangzhou, which are also concerned over tentative
plans to open dog-racing tracks across the mainland.
Dave Neale, animal welfare director with the Animals Asia Foundation, said:
"Once these greyhounds arrive in Macau they have no legal protection to
prevent them from being abused and killed. They are kept in poor living
conditions then killed after their racing days are over."
Hong Kong SPCA executive director Sandy Macalister said: "We believe that
when you have the export of live animals for any purpose, the mechanisms and
outcomes should be subject to constant review. There is absolutely no
justification to compromise an animal's welfare for the purposes of
entertainment."
Separately, an international greyhound protection group called Greyhound
Crusaders has written to Stanley Ho and the dog track's directors calling
for the closure of the Canidrome "as an issue of morality".
"These majestic dogs who were once revered by Egyptian royalty are now
exploited and abused beyond belief," said the group's UK-based coordinator
Helen Stevens. "People who place bets on these dogs, however innocently,
have blood on their hands. We have suggested that the Canidrome take up a
new approach - `virtual' greyhound racing where real dogs are not used."
Dr Choi U Fai, who heads Macau's animal welfare department and monitors the
destruction and import of greyhounds, has called for Hong Kong to ease its
anti-rabies controls to allow the dogs to be exported as pets when they
retire. Canidrome officials did not respond to repeated calls and e-mails seeking
comment.

Please read the most recent article about the Macau Canidrome written by
Simon Parry. As you will see the race track are ignoring all campaigns and
pleas by us and international animal and greyhound protection groups and it
is business as usual for the Canidrome in MURDERING their dogs once they are
no longer deemed fit for the purpose of racing. The brilliant greyhound
campaign group Grey2KUSA, Animals Australia and now Animals Asia are
involved in this campaign to close the track but are all being dissed by the
Canidrome so we are now putting out an international appeal to all our
supporters to take this to the next level by asking you to please contact
the Chief Executive of Macau to ask him to help shut down the Canidrome. His
details are as follows :

Please remember to keep all correspondence polite.
Please tell the authorities that the Macau Canidrome has to close as an
issue of
morality. The continual murder of innocent animals will not be tolerated.
Please also tell them that the Canidrome are ignoring offers of help for the
dogs and are continually killing greyhounds that are no longer useful for
racing. Please explain that many people around the globe have now learnt of
this holocaust for greyhounds at Macau via the internet and that tourism
will now be greatly affected with many people boycotting Macau. This will
undoubtedly affect them financially.
The Canidrome has to close with immediate affect and all the greyhounds
found loving homes via international rescues.
With the continual use of facebook and other internet related ways of
communication the world has become a very small place whereby concerned
groups and individuals can support each other in order to help animals
albeit the other side of the world. We all have a duty to protect animals
wherever they are in the world and these innocent greyhounds are suffering
and dying continually at the hands of those that have no care or regard for
their welfare. It's sickening that this can still happen in the 21st century
therefore we must all do everything we can to stop this hence this important
appeal to all our national and international supporters.

A Hong Kong-based animal welfare group has written to Macau Chief Executive
Dr Fernando Chui Sai-on, asking him to close the city's greyhound racing
track where hundreds of healthy dogs are put to death every year.
Animals Asia wrote to Chiu and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture
Cheong U after inspecting conditions at the Canidrome, where a Sunday
Morning Post (SEHK: 0583, announcements, news) investigation found dogs were
destroyed by lethal injection at a rate of more than one a day. The group
said it found dogs "in a state of neglect" at the circuit.
"Dogs with injuries were forced to run while a crowd of less than 30 people
looked on," it said. "Greyhound racing isn't attracting people to the races,
but the greyhounds are still suffering.
"Even minimum welfare standards are not provided for the greyhounds; when
not racing, they're confined for long periods of time. When they race, they
often sustain serious injuries."
Animals Asia animal welfare director David Neale said: "Racing greyhounds
for entertainment inflicts severe suffering on many thousands of dogs
annually.
"A large proportion of greyhounds bred for racing are deemed unsuitable and
are euthanised, along with those that become injured, or are simply not
considered fast enough.
"Greyhound racing is an example of animal cruelty that should be consigned
to the history books."
The Animals Asia investigation follows a January report by Grey2K USA, which
found that from October 21 to December 31 last year, 302 of the 655 imported
racing dogs at the Canidrome suffered injuries - equivalent to four animals
a day. The Sunday Morning Post reported last year that 383 greyhounds were
put down at the Canidrome in 2010, most of them healthy dogs aged five to
six years.
Apart from the injured, dogs are retired when they fail to finish in the top
three for two or three consecutive races. Because the Canidrome will not
release former racing dogs for adoption, all retired dogs are killed.
The Canidrome has so far declined to comment and has not responded to any of
the petitions or letters from animal welfare groups.
