Please be a voice for these many thousands of greyhounds that have suffered
and died since 1926 when greyhound racing began in the UK. Many dogs are
still dying today all for the price of a sad bet so it is up to all of us
who respect and admire this wonderful breed to try and protect them and that
is through education of the general public not to support this cruel
industry. Sample letter provided below. Every letter counts from our
supporters across the country that will be read by thousands of people in
local and national newspapers. Together let's put an end to this greyhound
holocaust!

GREYHOUND REMEMBRANCE WEEKEND - JULY 21st & 22nd
In memory of all the dogs that have suffered and died because of the
greyhound racing industry - Please try to take part in this important
event.
Greyhound racing in the UK began on July 24th 1926 at Belle Vue Stadium in
Manchester.

Every year, on the nearest Saturday and Sunday to this date, we stage
Greyhound Remembrance Weekend, in memory of the hundreds of thousands of
dogs that have been abused and killed by the greyhound racing industry
since that day.

The Weekend is marked by street stalls and demos/pickets on the Saturday
and by remembrance ceremonies on the Sunday, when wreaths and flowers are
laid
outside greyhound stadiums, in memory of all the dogs that have suffered
and been put to death.
Please let us know, as soon as possible, if you'd like to organise, or
take part in, a Greyhound Remembrance Weekend event in your local area

It would also help greatly if all our supporters/sympathisers could write
letters to their local papers about Greyhound Remembrance Weekend.

SAMPLE LETTER RE GREYHOUND REMEMBRANCE WEEKEND

July 21st and 22nd is Greyhound Remembrance Weekend, when events are held
across the UK in memory of the hundreds of thousands of greyhounds that
have suffered and been put to death in the 86 years since commercial
greyhound
racing began in this country on July 24th, 1926.

According to greyhound protection organisation Action for Greyhounds, as
many as 10,000 greyhounds are still being "put down" every year, after
failing to make the grade as racers or when their "careers" on the tracks
come to an end.

An RSPCA report has stated that "at least 20 greyhounds a day - either
puppies which do not make the track, or 'retired' dogs aged three or
four -simply 'disappear', presumed killed".

In addition, hundreds of greyhounds sustain serious, sometimes fatal,
injuries whilst racing.

Members of the public can help put an end to this horrific situation by
not attending dog tracks or betting on greyhound racing, so this appalling
industry fades away through lack of financial support.

GB: Gedenken an die Greyhounds am 21. und 22. Juli
Am 24. Juli 1926 begann das Leiden der Greyhounds auf den Britischen Inseln.
An diesem Tag wurde das erste kommerzielle Hunderennen im Belle Vue Stadion in Manchester abgehalten. Was zunächst als der „Rennsport des kleinen Mannes“ begann, der sich nicht in die Welt von Ascot oder anderer Pferderennbahnen begeben konnte, hat zwischenzeitlich zur Tötung vieler Hunderttausend Greyhounds geführt. Aus dem Sport der ersten Tage ist längst eine Industrie entstanden, die sich nicht um das Wohl der Tiere kümmert. Kann sie sich doch aus einer nahezu unerschöpflichen Quelle bedienen.

Da Greyhounds auf den Britischen Inseln im Bewusstsein der Menschen nicht als Haustiere gelten, geht man mit ihnen meist wie mit einem Werkzeug um - wenn sie nicht für den eigentlichen Zweck taugen oder „kaputt“ sind, werden sie entsorgt. Um im Sprachgebrauch zu bleiben, sie wandern im besten Fall auf den „Recyclinghof“, also in eines der Tierheime, wo sie innerhalb einer Stunde getötet werden.

Oder aber sie landen mit abgeschnittenen Ohren, um die Identifizierung durch die Tätowierungen zu vermeiden, in aufgelassenen Steinbrüchen, wie vor einigen Wochen in der Nähe von Limerick entdeckt.
All dieser Hunde, die durch Menschenhand gelitten und von Menschenhand aus niederen wirtschaftlichen Überlegungen getötet wurden, soll am 21. Und 22. Juli gedacht werden.

Hierzu organisiert Greyhound Action überall auf der Britischen Insel Infostände und Veranstaltungen.
Auch, wenn wir in Deutschland nicht an diesen Aktionen vor Ort teilnehmen können, so bitten wir doch alle Greyhoundfreunde, an diesen beiden Tagen all der unzähligen Hunde zu gedenken, die seit 1926 zu Tode gekommen sind.
