Gold Coast Greyhound Adoptions- Gainesville
Late this afternoon we got a call from Judy Shamp with the Orlando branch about a greyhound that was running down I-75. Yes I said I-75. Some folks got him (stopping traffic) and held him until we could get there. Kendra drove down and picked him up and rushed him to the emergency clinic. He was running with his racing muzzle on and from the look of the wounds, he has been running for at least 3 days. He has over 20 wounds on his body with some severe road rash. IF he survives the night, we will see what we can do to heal the wounds. Donations will be greatly appreciated as his bill estimate is already at $1500. We are calling him Freeway for now. He is a 2 year old fawn male. Please donate through our website via PayPal or send checks to GCGA.

Freeway coming out of surgery. Compression bandages on body. We are still planning that he comes into a foster home on Friday afternoon. He will have bandage changes for weeks

Freeway update - out of hospital and at Kendra's home. As you can see, not quite as many bandages but still a lot! Next few days will tell us if he is going to pull through. He is a fighter for sure but he still needs to eat on his own. Next few days will be wet to dry bandages and once he has some nice granulation tissue, then just keep the wounds clean until they heal completely.
I can't thank everyone enough for all of the donations we received. I can't thank the staff at the UF vet school ICU for all of their care and best wishes especially Dr. Skinner and Maria (Vet Student)
We do not have enough yet to cover the bill at the Vet School ($3450) but I am sure we will make it! Keep those donations coming

First - let me say thank you to all who have donated or have promised to donate. We have many chapters under the GCGA umbrella and the Orlando and Clearwater branches have been helping us (Gainesville) chapter collect donations.
Second - the owner has been found and has been contacted thanks to one of our volunteers. I have been way too busy to track that aspect down but thanks to our volunteer who did. We are awaiting his response.
Third - two stories have now been "confirmed" one a fight on a hauler where the one dog got loose and was not found, and a second one involving a hauler accident. There are accidents in this world and things like this happen.
Fourth - My priority (and GCGA as a whole) has always been to get Freeway the help he needs. Period. Our mission is the dogs and nothing more. We took the call from the person who found him on I-75, rushed him to the Vet School and the rest you know.
NOW - I am please to say his temperature is normal, he is eating kibble, drinking water on his own, has started exploring the house (yes he is walking even though his feet and legs are swollen), is peeing and pooping. He still has 2 wounds that are quite worrisome and I will be meeting with the soft tissue surgeon today to discuss the plan.
Thankfully, I can say with the donations that have come in, we have enough money to give Freeway this option for a second debridement surgery. All donations we receive right now are going towards Freeway unless stipulated otherwise. If you didn't put in the PayPal remarks section "for Freeway" we are assuming it IS for him.
I am trying to keep up with the emails of support that have been coming in but Freeway has taken up most of my time since Wednesday night. I apologize if you did not get a specific response back from me. So for all of those I may have not responded to - THANK YOU for all of your kind words, prayers, wishes, and donations. I have gotten emails from several countries and at least 25 states so far. And a thank you from Freeway who as I was typing this, I had to chase out of my bathroom as he thought the drawer handle was something fun to chew on!
