This coming Friday - 25th - Saint Francis Hospice will be holding a fundraising event at Romford dog track.

The fundraising team have already been made aware of the industry's cruel practices and of the thousands of greyhounds that go 'unaccounted' for every year.

However - they have since been assured by a representative of the Retired Greyhound Trust that "every effort is taken to ensure that although racing and competitive sport of any type obviously carries the chance of injury, the cruel practices which you mention are very much on the decline".


Sadly the fundraising team has said they "really have to accept the help of local businesses - of all types - to enable us to carry on providing essential services"

Please write polite emails to the Board of Trustees and advise them that greyhound racing is absolutely dependent on inherent cruel practices for its financial viability and very survival.

The culling of thousands of puppies that fail to chase the mechanical lure or are to slow to 'make the grade'

The destruction of dogs sustaining even minor treatable injuries on the dangerously configured tracks simply because it is more economical to replace an injured dog with a younger healthier dog - rather than treat a dog that cannot race and earn their keep.

The destruction of thousands of healthy dogs simply because it is more cost effective to destroy rather than spend time and money trying to find a retirement home.

The latter two options are openly condoned and effectively promoted by the industry on their Retirement Form - section D

Please also advise the Trustees that although the Greyhound Board of Great Britain have consistently refused to publish the data captured on the Retirement Forms - recent research indicates some 10,000 greyhounds - including the puppies culled before they even reach the track - go unaccounted for annually.

You may also like to point out the industry's failure to ensure the welfare of dogs kennelled at trainer's premises.

Finally - please respectfully request the Trustees extend their compassion to these innocent dogs that are exploited and discarded by the cruel gambling industry and cease their association with the unethical 'business' of dog racing and don't forget to tell them what wonderful gentle companions greyhounds are!
