The Twelve Greys of Christmas
The Twelve Days of Christmas is an English Christmas carol in which the
singer describes a series of increasingly grand gifts given to her by her
lover on each of the twelve days of Christmas, starting on Christmas day
through to January the 6th. The Twelve Greys of Christmas is an Irish
Christmas story in which a gift is also given, the grandest gift of all
..
Just before Christmas, twelve very skinny, flea ridden greyhounds, cast offs
of the racing industry, were handed in to Slaine Pound in County Meath,
Ireland. In Ireland, hand-ins like these greyhounds become the property of
the pound after just 24 hours and can be put up for adoption or put to
sleep. Greyhounds are rarely adopted in Ireland, where they are largely
viewed as a dispensable commodity and as too aggressive to be a family pet.
Had it not been for two very determined women, Lucky Poucova and Philomena
Mooney of Great Hounds in Need, it is highly unlikely any of these
greyhounds would have left the pound alive. When Lucky and Philomena heard
about their plight, they decided to give them a gift that is far grander
than any the singers lover gave to her in the Christmas carol. They decided
to give these greyhounds the gift of life.
A frantic plea went out for foster homes for the greyhounds, and a few good
people opened their homes and their hearts to take five of the dogs in. Then
Erin Hounds and Cork DAWG kindly offered to take the other seven greyhounds
between them. With the help of a raft of volunteers, the dogs were taken out
of the pound and transported to their temporary homes, to safety. So, a
happy ending, you think. Well, not quite
..
The end is still a way off for these greyhounds. They are safe now, but
they all need basic veterinary care (vaccinations, de-fleaing, worming,
neutering/spaying and micro-chipping), some need dental work, and a few may
need more intensive veterinary treatment as they are in poor health. Then,
of course, they will need homes. And to find these, they will most likely
have to be moved out of Ireland. Basic veterinary care for one greyhound
costs in the region of 250 euros. Add to that the unknown costs of dental
treatment and further veterinary treatment. Then add 200 euros for
transportation to the Czech Republic for some of the dogs. The basic cost of
giving the gifts of good health and a forever home to all these greyhounds
is going to be around 4,000 euros. In the end, depending on veterinary fees,
it could be a lot higher. And, sadly, none of the charities involved have
that kind of money hanging on the Christmas tree this year!
So, its time to put out another plea. Can you give the Twelve Greyhounds of
Christmas a gift too? Now, if you could give five gold coins, as the singers
lover did on the fifth day of Christmas, that would be fantastic, but five
euros would be great too! Anything you can give will help Great Hounds in
Need, Erin Hounds and Cork DAWG to give these dogs the gifts of good health
and a loving forever home.
