2011 was another year of great advancements in canine health and
successes for the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF).

With your support we are able to report on:

hemangiosarcoma treatments in development
unique genetic signatures in two osteosarcoma subtypes which can be
used to predict outcome and guide treatment decisions for individual
patients
minimal long-term respiratory set-backs for the search and rescue dogs
deployed after September 11
the discovery of the gene responsible for late-onset Neuronal ceroid
lipofuscinoses (NCLs) in American Staffordshire Terriers and how that
discovery benefits human medicine
the discovery of the gene responsible for lens luxation in terriers
and the resulting genetic test

And we have already approved 21 new grants to start in 2012. These
grants have significant implications to help dogs live longer,
healthier lives:

New or improved treatments for canine lymphoma, respiratory tract
inflammation, cataracts, inflammatory bowl disease, atopic dermatitis,
and melanoma
Genetic causes of transitional cell carcinoma, sebabeous adenitis,
atopic dermatitis, scottie cramp, glaucoma, portosystemic shunt,
epilepsy, and osteosarcoma
Deeper understanding of renal disease and cranial cruciate ligament
deficiency
