Coventry Telegraph Letters: Dark side of greyhound racing can't be ignored

IN December 2009 Brandon Stadium closed its doors to greyhound racing, many
of us thought that would be the end of this sport in our area. Sadly that
was not to be, on Sunday May 20 Brandon opened its doors again.
I would like to address comments made during a local radio interview by
promoter Harry Findlay, firstly that protesters know nothing about
greyhounds, they love to run.
Yes they do love to run, but in an open space and not up against another
five dogs on sharp bends where they can be forced against the rails, or
another dog cuts in front of them causing them to check their stride which
could cause a potential injury.
Injuries in greyhound racing are minimal. Are they? Then how can Mr
Findlay explain how 11 dogs lost their lives at Belle Vue in a two-month
period, and five lost their lives at Swindon over the same two months?
There is no cruelty within the racing industry. Then Mr Findlay please
explain the Seaham massacre in Durham where owners paid £10 to have their no
longer useful racing dogs shot in the head, or a national newspaper article
published the same day you re-opened Brandons doors in which volunteers
from a UK charity save up to 200 unwanted dogs a year from being burned or
buried alive in Ireland. They are talking about unwanted racing greyhounds,
Mr Findlay.
I am not an anti-greyhound protester Mr Findlay, and you will not see me
stood outside your gates on a race night protesting. But this letter will
hopefully make the general public aware that not all of what you say about
the racing industry is true.
Kathryn Walmsley,
The Chilterns,
Allesley Park,
Coventry.
