Over 380 greyhounds put to death every year at Macau Canidrome
Animals Asia continues to lobby against the import of greyhounds from Australia to the Macau Canidrome dog racing track, where hundreds of dogs are kept in unsuitable conditions, forced to race when injured and callously killed when they are no longer winners.
In December 2011 we contacted Australian Prime Minister, The Hon Julia Gillard MP, to express our concern and request that the export of greyhounds from Australia be stopped immediately.

To date, there has been no response from any member of the current Australian government.
-In January 2012, Animals Asia attended the greyhound races in Macau and saw dogs that were in a state of neglect. Dogs with injuries were forced to run while a crowd of less than thirty people looked on. Greyhound racing is clearly not attracting people, yet the greyhounds are still made to suffer.
Greyhounds Australasia (responsible for the export of Australia's greyhounds to Macau) held a Board meeting in March before which we asked them to consider suspending all greyhound passports until their invesitgation was complete. Unfortunately, they decided to allow exports of dogs to Macau and China to continue despite being aware of the fate that awaits them.

In February 2012, we wrote to Fernando Chui, Chief Executive of Macau, and Cheong U, Secretary of Social Affairs and Culture, to urge them to put an end to greyhound racing in Macau, including the following key points:
• At the Macau Canidrome, over 380 greyhounds are put to death each year because they no longer win races.
• Even minimum welfare standards are not provided for the greyhounds; when not racing, they’re confined for long periods of time. When they race, they often sustain serious injuries.
• Awareness of this issue is starting to spread around the world, and will eventually damage Macau’s reputation on the global stage. The Asia for Animals Alliance, representing eleven international organizations with extensive animal welfare experience, has written to the Prime Minister of Australia appealing to the Australian Government to end the export of greyhounds to Macau.

Further comments from Dave:
“Racing greyhounds for entertainment inflicts severe suffering on many thousands of dogs annually. A large proportion of greyhounds bred for racing are deemed unsuitable for and are euthanized, along with those that become injured, or are simply not considered fast enough.”
“There are no comprehensive regulations to eliminate practices that cause injury, suffering or distress to the dogs. Greyhound racing is an example of animal cruelty that should be consigned to the history books.”
