https://www.facebook.com/groups/4702733 ... 070205065/I would like to take a moment of your time to discuss greyhounds.
My name is Rory Goreé and I’ve been a member of the greyhound adoption community since 1993. During that time, I’ve volunteered in many capacities and have been deeply involved in numerous kennel, farm and track closures.
In just a few days the citizens of Florida will be voting on Amendment 13. Should this amendment pass, thousands of greyhounds will be in need of adoption within weeks of passage, if not sooner. This will not just impact Florida - it will be nationwide, even impacting the greyhounds racing at the Caliente track in Mexico.
As I write, those who seek the passage of Amendment 13 have offered no plan to properly account for, transport and handle the thousands of greyhounds that will need to be sent to adoption groups and placed in forever homes. Many who support the passage of Amendment 13 claim the greyhounds will go to "shelters" but ask yourself - what about the dogs and cats that normally rely on shelters?
In every kennel, farm and track closure, we had a team of knowledgeable greyhound adoption volunteers who stepped up and did remarkable work. The objective was to always ensure we had the support and funding necessary to successfully resolve the tremendous tasks we have before us. I think back to Pat Roberts and her personal commitment regarding the closure of the Juarez, Mexico greyhound track and the tireless work of the late Linda Jensen who worked night and day finding groups and transportation for every one of the Plainfield greyhounds. I personally know the work the late Kari Young put into closures of the Apache Junction and Phoenix Arizona greyhound tracks. No matter what your personal view is regarding greyhound racing, the majority of volunteers in greyhound adoption have always focused on one thing – the ex-racing greyhound and doing our best to find forever homes for all of them.
I’m a realist. My view is not will greyhound racing continue or will it end. My realistic view, based on 25+ years of greyhound adoption from local to national levels, is that we MUST be prepared. It is better to be prepared and not needed than to be needed and not prepared.
When we faced farm, kennel and track closures in the past, the one item I made sure was always available to our volunteer team was leadership and financial support. Recently Greyhound Pets of America-National brought me back on board as President to assist with such an event should one occur. One huge item lacking should thousands of greyhounds become available in the next few weeks is the financial ability to fully account, properly care for and ensure each is placed into a loving home without jeopardizing dogs and cats that rely on shelters. Unfortunately, our reserves for financial assistance to support teams of volunteers who will be called into action should Amendment 13 pass are bare. Again, being a realistic person, we could be called upon to assist in buying time and placement of ex-racing greyhounds ranging from 1-15,000 in number. Nothing of this magnitude has ever faced the greyhound adoption community before in order to ensure each greyhound it's safety, proper care and placement, we will need $300.00 per dog in the emergency coffers. While it is equally possible Amendment 13 gets defeated, it would be better to be prepared than risk a single greyhound to neglect and possibly death.
Years ago, I worked with an organization that sent an individual to monitor the shelters in the Phoenix area. Her job was to count the number of adoptable dogs and cats and also keep track how many actually found homes and how many euthanized. This individual would always call me when she found a greyhound in the shelter. One such greyhound I named Marty, after this wonderful woman who had an extremely difficult job. I have been working with the volunteers at Greyhounds Make Great Pets and GMGP has offered to be the caretakers for a greyhound track, farm and kennel closure fund that has been named The Marty Fund.
The team is ready but we need the funds to ensure the team of volunteers from Greyhound Pets of America and the supporting hauling and adoption programs have the ability to do what we do best - finding homes for ex-racing greyhounds.
Please make our goal become reality and assure the greyhounds flooding greyhound adoption due to the possible passage of Amendment 13 are properly and professionally take care of by experienced greyhound adoption volunteers. We need your commitment and your donations now more than ever.
