DEERJET SYDNEY – ENGLISH DERBY CHAMPION

Beitrag von Greyhound-Forum »

Ian Fortune

The headline says it all.

For ever more Deerjet Sydney will be referred to as the 2020 English Derby champion after the brilliant son of Droopys Sydney raced to a famous victory in the final of the Star Sports & ARC English Derby at Nottingham on Saturday night.

BUCKLEY EARNS HIS PLACE IN HISTORY

As it was for the Irish equivalent, the final was staged behind closed doors with just a few lucky diners on site to witness Deerjet Sydney create history for his handler Pat Buckley.

The Cappawhite handler became just the third man in history after his compatriot Paul Hennessy and Nick Savva to win a Derby in Ireland, Scotland and England.

Of course, Buckley had gone close in the past, seeing Mind The Net start a hot favourite in the 2014 final, while two years later Droopys Roddick went agonisingly close, finishing a neck second to Jaytee Jet.

Well, on Saturday night Pat Buckley scaled the mountain in the most impressive fashion imaginable with Deerjet Sydney completing his Derby journey in magnificent fashion.

SOUTHWOOD JET STARTED FAVOURITE

Ahead of the competition Deerjet Sydney had been a 28-1 chance with the sponsors Star Sports to claim Derby glory.

Fast forward some four weeks and Kenny Glen’s brilliant tracker went to traps the 11-4 clear second favourite to land the £50,000 winner’s purse.

Southwood Jet, after going through the classic unbeaten, was the 7-4 market leader while Wolfe was the third choice in the betting at 100-30. Coolavanny Chick, who was bidding to become the first female winner since 2003, was a 13-2 chance. Smurfs Machine was 9-1 while Ballydoyle Valor completed the field at 10-1.

AN EERIE SILENCE

This was a contest that was decided in the first three strides.

In contrast to the normally raucous atmosphere as the hare makes its way around the track, there was an almost eerie silence at Nottingham with the only noise being the commentary of Paul Lawrence before the bang from the traps as the lids rose.

Southwood Jet, for the first time in the Derby, walked from traps. His race was already over. In contrast Deerjet Sydney came away with real purpose. Showing immediate acceleration, he found himself in pole position from the opening strides.

Ballydoyle Valor and Wolfe also came away well from traps three and four but the kennel companions were to bump as they tried to swap positions on the track. This allowed Smurfs Machine to quicken into second spot but he faced a massive climb to reel in Deerjet Sydney.

SYDNEY FLIES INTO TURN

Deerjet Sydney posted his fastest sectional of the competition, stopping the clock in 4.91.

To highlight his dominance in the early yards, no other greyhound went under 5 seconds. Instead Smurfs Machine was next fastest, clocking 5.02.

Ballydoyle Valor overcame the early bumping with Wolfe to sit third on the bend with Coolavanny Chick on his shoulder. Southwood Jet and Wolfe came next but it was clear neither were going to land a blow thereafter.

Sadly, as they exited the second bend Wolfe seemed to lose his stride as he bumped into the rear end of Southwood Jet and he eventually tailed home last (See separate story).

BROTHERS SETTING THE PACE

Deerjet Sydney led by three lengths from his litter brother Smurfs Machine as they entered the back straight.

The sons of Droopys Sydney and Madgies Wish, who were bred by Eileen Lingane in Fermoy, Cork, were first and second in the Derby final. It must have been a surreal experience for their breeder.

VALOR EMERGES AS A THREAT

Ballydoyle Valor was about to crash the party, however.

Displaying real pace and determination down the back straight, the Graham Holland trained star moved upsides and past Smurfs Machine at the third turn. Coolavanny Chick also closed in fourth but it was Valor that was to provide the biggest threat to Deerjet Sydney.

SYDNEY’S TIME

Between the last two bends, Deerjet Sydney continued to dictate by three and a half lengths but Ballydoyle Valor was started to edge closer.

As the straightened for home, the pursuer was within three lengths and still closing.

This was Deerjet Sydney’s time, however. The fluent white and brindle star was destined to capture this Derby and he did so, digging deep to contain the late flourish of Ballydoyle Valor by three quarters of a length in 29.38.

It had been a wonderful performance from Ballydoyle Valor in defeat. He certainly gave his owners Pat and Justin Muldoon plenty to be proud of while the same can be said for Coolavanny Chick, who also ran her heart out back in third, some three lengths further adrift.

Smurfs Machine was fourth, Southwood Jet fifth, while Wolfe finished a distance behind, last of the six finalists.

AN IRISH DOMINATION

It was a fitting ending to a classic that had largely been dominated by the Irish.

After winning the very first race of the Derby some four weeks earlier, Deerjet Sydney had also won the very last race of the classic, leading home an Irish trained 1-2-3 for the second year running.

Of the thirty-one races in the competition, the Irish won an incredible eighteen of them.

EMMA STEALS THE SHOW

Pat Buckley was understandably delighted to finally win the English Derby but it was his daughter Emma that really stole the show on RPGTV.

Emma spoke with real passion, joy and empathy.

Her thoughts turned to Austin Whelan and his family following the sad passing of his brother John last week. She spoke of how much it meant to her family, her father and herself.

Speaking to Julie Collier on live TV, Emma captured the moment perfectly, “It doesn’t feel real almost. I’m speechless. Its so good for Dad. He’s been coming over here for so many years, battling and I think we all shed a tear when he [Deerjet Sydney] came over that line, and everyone at home and for Kenny, I’m just speechless. He’s been a dream for us. It’s great.”

A proud father, Pat stepped in then referencing his daughter, “She’s the best”. He then pointed to the trophy, “That’s for Mum and Dad tomorrow evening. That’s what it’s all about. That’s going back to Doon tomorrow night. That’s the best half hour of our life.”

Pat went on to thank June and Tony Harvey, his kennel hand Paul before Emma again spoke so eloquently, saying, “Jeannie mac, we’re so proud of him {her father], he always told us to get back up and go again and he’s finally having his moment. He had that bit of luck tonight and I think it's all down to John Whelan looking over at us.”

A SPECIAL NIGHT KENNY GLEN

This was a real family victory for Pat and Emma Buckley and those watching at home.

It also must have been pretty surreal for owner Kenny Glen, who spoke on RPGTV via the phone soon after the final.

He was watching from the comfort of his own couch and expressed his delight at finally capturing a Derby crown.

It was a pretty incredible night for Glen. Not only did he capture the Derby with Deerjet Sydney but he also tasted victory with Doolin Duke in the RPGTV Derby Plate and the ARC Trophy with Gonzo. Of course, Doolin Duke is also trained by Pat Buckley and he arguably produced the performance of the night when racing right away from a classy field in the Plate final.

Racing further and further clear, the son of Laughil Duke posted a fastest of the night 29.21, seeing off his compatriot Catunda Logan by seven lengths in the process.

Gonzo had also been trained by Pat Buckley in the past but is now under the care of Julie Bateson and he won the ARC Trophy in similar style, leading throughout to beat Hopes Bullet by three and a quarter lengths in 29.61.
