EN: No more muzzles: Retired greyhounds not dangerous

Beitrag von Greyhound-Forum »

Australia
Retired racing greyhounds will no longer have to wear muzzles in public in a bid to make the breed
more desirable as pets, with the minister involved saying there is no reason for greyhounds to be
considered dangerous.

The state government is making changes to the Dog Act 1976 to encourage more people to adopt
the breed.
The changes come after 1192 written submissions and a 2700-signature petition was received by the government, advocating for the removal of compulsory greyhound muzzling laws for pet greyhounds.

The Act lists greyhounds as the only dog breed in Western Australia that has to be muzzled.

Local Government Minister David Templeman said the state government was committed to ensuring the welfare of all animals, including greyhounds, which he said made magnificent family pets.

“Removing the requirements for pet greyhounds to be muzzled in public places will improve the welfare of these animals and increase retired racing greyhound adoption,” he said.

“There is no scientific evidence at all that shows they are a breed that should be considered dangerous, like any other breed.

“I encourage every Western Australian to consider adoption, whether this is a greyhound from a rehoming agency or a dog from an animal refuge, as an alternative to purchase when getting their
next dog.”

Greyhound welfare advocacy group Free the Hounds spokesperson Andrea Pollard said she was “ecstatic” about the changes to the act, which will be implemented next year.

“We’ve been fighting for equality for greyhounds so to see it finally happen is a very exciting day for greyhound welfare in WA,” she said.

“There is still a lot of misconception out there that people think greyhounds are aggressive or highly strung.

“Greyhounds are really gentle and loving dogs.”

Maylands MP Lisa Baker said many of the submissions received were from the racing industry itself who said there was no need for these dogs to be muzzled when they’re re-homed.

Registered racing greyhounds will continue to be required to wear muzzles in all public places according to the Greyhound Rules of Racing.
