Connor Langhorn with Maggie the greyhound
A RETIRED racing greyhound is helping children at a Coventry school turn
from reluctant readers into young bookworms.
Maggie the greyhound visits Whitmore Park Primary School once a week. She
provides an uncritical audience for children struggling to find the
confidence to read aloud.
Her placid temperament means she is gentle with the children and happy to
lie down and have a rest while they read.
Staff at the school, in Halford Lane, Keresley, say children who were
reluctant to even pick up a book are now keen to read a page of their story
to Maggie. To begin with, staff put plenty of dog stories on the reading
list.
Maggie heard all about scruffy dog Hairy McClary from Donaldson's Dairy and
enjoyed the adventures of Speedy, a fellow retired greyhound.
But after that children were encouraged to bring in their own favourite
books.

They read Maggie stories about Elmer the elephant and baby owls.
The session reading to Maggie has become the highlight of the week for the
children taking part.
Maggie's visits to the school are part of the Read 2 Dogs scheme run by
Buckinghamshire based charity Pets as Therapy.
Maggie's owner Lucy Langhorn, a 37-year-old childminder, heard about the
scheme and was keen to put it into action at Whitmore Park, where her son
Connor, six, is a pupil. She and her mother Maureen, 63 and retired,
supervise Maggie while school staff encourage small groups of children to
read to her.
